US Freelancer Tax Deadlines: 2026-2027

The US tax system is pay-as-you-go, and a missed date usually means a penalty. These are the deadlines that matter for self-employed people and 1099 contractors through the 2026 tax year and the 2027 filing season - quarterly estimated payments, the annual return, extensions, and the 1099 forms you send or receive. Federal dates shift by a day or two when they land on a weekend or holiday, so confirm the exact date with the IRS.

Next up: the third 2026 estimated-tax payment is due September 15, 2026. If your 2026 income is running ahead of last year, recalculate before you pay.

2026 quarterly estimated-tax deadlines

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year after withholding, the IRS wants estimated payments four times a year. The "quarters" are uneven - the second period is only two months and the fourth is four - so do not assume they are three months apart.

Payment Income period 2026 due date
Q1 January 1 - March 31, 2026 April 15, 2026
Q2 April 1 - May 31, 2026 June 15, 2026
Q3 June 1 - August 31, 2026 September 15, 2026
Q4 September 1 - December 31, 2026 January 15, 2027

Working out the amount is the hard part, not sending it. Our quarterly tax calculator turns your expected net profit into a per-quarter figure, and the safe harbor calculator shows the payment that protects you from penalties no matter how the year ends.

Filing your 2026 return (in 2027)

You report a full tax year on one return the following spring. The 2026 tax year is filed in early 2027:

  • Return due: around April 15, 2027. This is the deadline to file your Form 1040 (with Schedule C and Schedule SE) and pay any remaining tax.
  • Extension: filing Form 4868 by the April deadline pushes the filing date to October 15, 2027. An extension to file is not an extension to pay - you still have to estimate and pay what you owe by April, or interest and penalties accrue.

Still finishing your 2025 return?

If you filed an extension for the 2025 tax year, the final deadline to file that return is October 15, 2026. Any tax due was still payable back in April 2026, so file as soon as you can to stop late-payment interest from growing.

1099 deadlines (if you pay or receive them)

If you hire other contractors, you may have to issue 1099s; if clients pay you, you may receive them. The key date is the same:

  • January 31, 2027 (the next business day if it falls on a weekend) - the deadline to send Form 1099-NEC to each contractor you paid and to file it with the IRS.
  • Collect a Form W-9 from every contractor before you pay them, so you have the details ready in January.

One change to know: starting with 2026 payments, the reporting threshold for 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC rose from $600 to $2,000. A client who pays you less than $2,000 in 2026 may not send a 1099 - but that income is still taxable and you must report it. Do not wait for a form to declare what you earned.

What happens if you miss a deadline

Missing an estimated payment triggers an underpayment penalty, which works like interest on the amount you should have paid, accruing from the due date until you pay. It is not catastrophic for a single small shortfall, but it compounds. Two ways to stay safe:

  • Use the safe harbor. Pay at least 90% of this year's tax, or 100% of last year's total tax (110% if your prior-year AGI was over $150,000), and you avoid the penalty regardless of how the year turns out.
  • Lean on W-2 withholding. If you also hold a job, extra withholding counts as paid evenly across the year and can cover the gap without separate quarterly payments.

State deadlines are separate

Most states with an income tax run their own estimated-payment schedule and their own portal, and the dates do not always match the federal ones. Nine states have no personal income tax at all. Check your state's department of revenue for its calendar - paying the IRS does not cover your state.
