What is an invoice?
An invoice is a document a seller sends to a buyer that lists the goods or services provided, their cost, and the total amount due. It is both a request for payment and a record of the transaction for accounting and tax purposes.
What should an invoice include?
A clear, professional invoice usually contains:
- A unique invoice number and issue date
- Seller and buyer names, addresses, and contact details
- An itemised list of products or services
- Quantities, unit rates, and line totals
- Subtotal, taxes or discounts, and the grand total
- Payment terms, due date, and accepted payment methods
Why payment terms matter
Payment terms tell your client when and how to pay. Spelling out a due date and terms such as "Net 15" or "Due on receipt" reduces confusion and helps you get paid on time. Use our due date calculator to set the right date.
Taxes for 1099 freelancers
If you work as a 1099 contractor in the US, you pay self-employment tax (15.3% on most of your net profit) on top of federal and state income tax, and you typically owe estimated taxes every quarter. A good rule of thumb is to set aside 25 to 35 percent of what you earn. Use our 1099 tax calculator to see your real number, the freelance rate calculator to price your work, and the freelancer guides to learn the essentials.
